On This Day In Boxing History (June 5, 1952) 


JERSEY JOE WALCOTT met EZZARD CHARLES for the 4th time in one of the best rivalries in boxing history (Heavyweight). Just a few months before, Walcott landed one of the most storied punches in the history of the game---a short left-hook that put Charles down for the count and Jersey Joe Walcott became the oldest fighter (at 37 years of age) to win sport’s most coveted title. It was a record which stood until GEORGE FOREMAN broke it over forty years later in 1994 – recapturing the title at age 45. Walcott won their 4th fight via a very close decision! 

Jersey Joe Walcott would lose the title to an up and coming Rocky Marciano in September of 1952. He went down fighting, though; sending Rocky to the canvas in the opening round and building a solid points lead before getting stopped in the 13th round.

War of words highlights Parlee Beach bout 

Collette to opponent Arsenault: 'You're too old; you're too short; you're going down'

The fight isn't for another four weeks, but Julien Collette and Emile Arsenault were ready to battle yesterday at the news conference announcing their standoff for the Maritime Heavyweight Title.


Arsenault countered with: "I tried to battle you on the ice, but you turtled."


"I don't remember you on the ice. Were you on the first line or were you the eighth defenceman?" Collette quickly shot back.
