Bouctouche power puncher retains title

Collette posts KO victory over Frees in main event

SHEDIAC - Julien Collette sits 10th in the Canadian heavyweight boxing rankings, but Moncton promoter Dwayne Storey expects the Bouctouche power-puncher to move up the list.

Collette added to his resume Saturday night by knocking out Anders Frees of Eel River Crossing at 1:41 of the first round to retain his Maritime heavyweight title before a capacity crowd of 1,200 spectators at the Shediac Festival Arena.

Frees opened the main event with a few early shots, but Collette responded with a flurry. He landed a three-punch combination to send Frees to the canvass and end the fight early.

"We're going to keep Julien active and this was an impressive win," Storey said. "With three straight knockouts, we expect him to make a move up in the Canadian rankings."

The victory improved Collette's professional record to 6-1 with four knockouts.

Meanwhile, Eric Roy of St-Basile captured the Maritime light heavyweight championship by knocking out Robbie Cameron of Moncton.

Roy (4-1) floored Cameron three times before his was counted out at 1:54 of the first round.

Emile Arsenault, a 44-year-old Shediac resident, improved his record to 3-1 by defeating Jeff Lundberg of Saint John in a heavyweight bout. The fight was halted at 2:02 of the second round.

Boiestown's Chris Norrad retained his Maritime cruiserweight title with a fourth round knockout of Guy Desforges of Eel River Corssing. Norrad ran his record to 7-0 with three knockouts.

In the opening round of the Next Great Heavyweight II tournament, Mark Sock of Elsipogtog knocked out Danny Savoie of Dalhousie at 1:24 of the second round. The fight mark's Savoie's professional debut.

Sylvain Roy of St-Basile notched a unanimous decision victory over Adam Kennedy of Grand Lake.

The tournament resumes Aug. 6 in Shediac. Six fighters remain in contention for the championship.

Long-time boxing coach Phil Baraly and referee Hubert Earle were honoured during Saturday's card.
