Collette claims Eastern Canadian title
Bouctouche boxer earns knockout victory over Matt Acorn
SHEDIAC - After telling the Times & Transcript he was going to knock Matt Acorn out in the Shediac Fight Fest professional boxing main event, Julien Collette made his prediction a reality.
The Bouctouche native floored the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Acorn in the first round to win the Eastern Canadian heavyweight boxing championship, and he did it in style Saturday evening.
After being pummelled by his opponent in the opening moments, Collette retaliated with a number of combinations and dropped the Prince Edward Island fighter three times before the bout was called.
"Julien proved a great deal to everyone who watched tonight and to himself," said Dwayne Storey, New Generation Boxing promoter and event organizer.
"He can take a punch, his chin was iron and so was his will to overcome adversity and slay the giant he was facing in Matt Acorn."
Collette improved his professional record to 7-1 in front of a sold out Festival Arena in Shediac.
Kevin Cormier of Cap-Pele made his pro boxing debut an impressive one, knocking out Saint John's Jeff Lundberg in the first round.
Cormier made a name for himself as a junior hockey enforcer and looks forward to stepping back in the ring in the near future.
Jonah Arbuckle took a unanimous decision over St. Basile's Eric Roy in another high-profile fight on the card.
Arbuckle, of Moncton (6-2), used speed and skill to capture the Eastern Canadian super middleweight championship in six rounds.
Shediac native and local favourite Emile Arsenault captured the New Brunswick cruiserweight title with a second-round technical knockout victory over Russ LeBlanc of Bouctouche. The 44-year-old Arsenault now holds a 4-1 pro record.
St. Basile's Sylvain Roy took home the New Brunswick heavyweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Mark Sock of Elsipogtog while Boiestown native Chris Norrad defended his Maritime cruiserweight belt by knocking out Moncton's Dale Simmonds. Norrad remains undefeated at 9-0 with five knockouts.
In other bouts, Patrick Arsenault of Shediac defeated Joe Dugas of Yarmouth, N.S., by unanimous decision; former Canadian champion Ronald Savoie of Eel River Crossing made a successful comeback, defeating Jason Bernarva of Moncton via unanimous decision; Guy Desforges of Eel River Crossing defeated Stephen Clement of Elsipogtog with a first-round knockout; and Kyle McNeil of Dartmouth, N.S., defeated Evan Allison of Moncton via a fourth-round TKO.
New Generation Boxing will soon announce details of an upcoming fall event.
