Canadian boxing title bout set for Shediac
It's first time since 1970 that NB'ers will clash for a national pro ring title
SHEDIAC - A 41-year drought is ready to come to an end.
Jonah Arbuckle of Moncton and Eric Roy of St. Basile will clash for the vacant Canadian Professional Boxing Federation super middleweight title on Nov. 5 at Louis-J-Robichaud High School in Shediac. The doors will open at 6 p.m. with the action beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Arbuckle, 7-2, and Roy, 5-2, will meet in a scheduled 10-round fight that serves as part of the double main event for this six-bout professional boxing card.
This marks the first time since 1970 that two New Brunswickers will meet for a Canadian professional boxing title. Back then, Colin Fraser of the Miramichi took the Canadian super lightweight title from Albert (Ace) Breau of Moncton in Quebec City.
"A New Brunswicker will be crowned a Canadian professional boxing champion for the first time in 15 years that night," said Dwayne Storey, who's promoting the event. "The last Canadian champion from this province was Ron Savoie of Eel River Crossing.
"This will be the first time two New Brunswickers have squared off in New Brunswick for a Canadian professional boxing title. It's also the first Canadian championship bout in Shediac. This venue has a capacity of 800 and we're expecting a sellout. We don't expect to have any tickets at the door on fight night."
Tickets are $35 general admission and $65 ringside. There are also eight-seat VIP tables which are $700 and $600 depending on whether you're in the first or second row.
Ticket outlets are Frank's Music in Moncton, the Bayou and CC's Lounge in Shediac, Try Us Video in Cap-Pele, Gaudet's Grocery in Grand Barachois, Joanne's Video in Bouctouche or by phone at 961-4265.
The other half of the double main event is Julien Collette of Bouctouche versus Sylvain Roy of St-Basile in a scheduled eight-round heavyweight bout. Collette is 8-1 and Roy is 3-0. Collette is the Maritime and Eastern Canadian heavyweight champion and Roy is the New Brunswick heavyweight champion. All three titles will be on the line in this bout.
Following are the other bouts on the card:
- Shediac's Emile Arsenault, 5-1, vs. Eel River Crossing's Guy Desforges, 4-5. Arsenault is putting his New Brunswick cruiserweight title on the line.
- Shediac's Patrick Arsenault, 3-0, vs. Eel River Crossing's Ron Savoie, 7-7-1, the former Canadian champion. Arsenault is the New Brunswick super welterweight champion.
- Fredericton's Brandon Brewer, 5-1, vs. Moncton's Paul Harris, who's making his professional debut, in light heavyweight.
- Cap-Pelé's Kevin Cormier, 2-0, vs. Fredericton's Justin Henderson, who's making his professional debut, in heavyweight.
